This self-study course in urinalysis has been designed to provide participants with an overview of microscopic urinalysis to include cells, casts, crystals, staining methods and unusual findings.

Although study materials will be sufficient for the purposes of this course, participants are encouraged to consult other texts and recently published papers or to make use of other study materials as may be appropriate.

Objectives

  • Correctly identify the following microscopic elements in urinary sediment: red blood cells, parasites, white blood cells, bacteria, epithelial cells, fungi, casts, artifacts and crystals
  • Correlate laboratory results with clinical disease states.
  • List the six parameters of an adequate quality control program in urinalysis and how to implement them into the laboratory setting.
