Christopher Doern, PhD, D(ABMM), Associate Director of Clinical Microbiology, Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center

Course provided by ASCLS.

This self-study will address several important aspects of instituting MALDI-TOF MS for organism identification. One strategy for justifying the significant cost of the instrument will be provided. It will also briefly define: (1) some things that should be considered when deciding which platform to purchase, (2) how to validate MALDI-TOF MS for clinical use and (3) the implementation of MALDI-TOF MS for clinical care. This self-study will conclude with a discussion of work-flow as well as an analysis of the post-implementation impact on patient care.
